 IU Trident Indiana University

Preparing Digital Cinema Packages for visiting filmmaker, Werner Herzog

Project Lead: Chris Eller, Advanced Visualization Lab, Research Technologies, Indiana University

The Advanced Visualization Lab, through our efforts in advanced digital arts and media, supported the mission of the Indiana University Cinema in a project to create a high quality digital cinema package (DCP) suitable for theatrical screenings of three Werner Herzog films: Aguirre: Wrath of God (1972), Nosferatu (1979), and Fitzcarraldo (1982). These DCPs were screened at IU with Herzog present and are now being prepared for screenings around the world.

These films were recently scanned and digitally re-mastered for a planned release on Blu-ray disc, however there were no funds available to pay for a commercial DCP process. The IU Cinema worked with Herzog’s production company to design a project to create these DCPs that would allow for optimal screenings of the films here at IU and at any digitally equipped cinema around the world. Creating these DCPs has opened up opportunities for revival screenings of these films in modern cinemas for a new generation of audience members. The AVL also gained experience working with professional quality media and a filmmaker known internationally.

This project was made possible through the collaborative relationship between the IU Cinema and the Advanced Visualization Lab, part of the Research Technologies Division of UITS. This is our first foray into supporting efforts to package digitized films for the modern cinema. Continued efforts with the Media Preservation Initiative will build on the knowledge and experience gained in working on these three Herzog films.
