EVIA: IU Data Capacitor and Lustre-WAN Support Ethnomusicology Research

EVIATechnology developed by NSF projects is used to support research that saves lives, improves our quality of life, and also to preserve records of the rich culture and history those lives produce. The Ethnomusicological Video for Instruction and Analysis Digital Archive (EVIA-DA) is a multi-year collaborative project between Indiana University (IU) and the University of Michigan to create a digital archive of field video recordings captured by ethnomusicology researchers. These performance videos are precious and important to researchers, because they capture music in times and places that cannot be recreated. Video recordings are digitized at the University of Michigan and then transferred to Indiana University where they are archived to tape and store on IU's High Performance Storage System (HPSS). This transfer process between the universities was less than ideal, as it can be cumbersome and time-consuming.

Using the Lustre-WAN service provided by Indiana University as an extension of the NSF Data Capacitor project, the EVIA-DA project team can now transfer files to IU for editing, annotation, and compression as quickly and simply as copying a file from one disk to another. The IU Data Capacitor is a resource on the TeraGrid, NSF’s network of high performance computers and data storage. Once on the Data Capacitor at IU, scholars can edit, annotate, and archive the files, while librarians can produce compressed copies for circulation.

“We’ve already had great success using Lustre WAN and the Data Capacitor to support scientific research – from cheminformtics to astronomy,” said Data Capacitor project lead, Stephen Simms. “The EVIA project demonstrates that this technology is not only important to science, but has broad applications across any number of academic disciplines.”
