UITS Research Technologies (and other UITS) staff collaborated with multiple entities, including the City of Bloomington, ESRI, Hoosier National Forest, the Indiana Geographic Information Council, the US Geological Survey, QuakeSim, and numerous IU units including The Polis Center, to present information and exhibits on the work enabled by GIS systems.  

On November 20, 2013, IU’s annual GIS Day event showcased what IU, local businesses, and government agencies do with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including the ways GIS technologies shape the way we live, learn and do business. Indiana Geological Survey representatives demonstrated the IndianaMap using a large screen display. Keynote speaker IU Professor Sara Pryor’s presentation “The Climate Science Puzzle” discussed the physical results of climate change and the processes for removing atmospheric aerosols. The Polis Center presented “Creating a Disaster-Resistant University,” based on FEMA’s own university hazard mitigaton plan. “Places & Spaces: Mapping Science” inspired cross-disciplinary discussion on how to track and communicate human activity and scientific progress on a global scale. Illuminated informational globes by journalist and artist Ingo Gunther’s World Processor Project mapped topic-specific data on global scales.  (

GIS Day is an “international forum for users of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.” GIS connects people with the geo-intelligence to work more efficiently and make better decisions. GIS supports a geographic approach to problem-solving. From Google and Bing Maps technology, to systems that monitor the spread of disease and manage environmental emergencies, GIS technologies are tools that help people do a better job and make a difference.
